Is Pet Sounds (the eleventh studio album by the American rock band The Beach Boys, released May 16, 1966, on Capitol Records) the greatest album of all time? This is a deliberately impossible query that certainly only some kind of otherworldly oracle could answer. What we know is that there was a great conversation happening between Brian Wilson and the Beatles back in the mid-’60s. It started with the Beatles release of the brilliant record, “Rubber Soul.” “Pet Sounds” was to be Brian Wilson’s response.
“Pet Sounds” is a genius album that you can revisit any day of your life and it will take you to a new place every time. Like an old friend it never becomes mundane. It doesn’t matter what mood your in because you’ll cry, laugh, feel passion/anger or become sentimental through each chord progression and masterful harmony. As soon as that vinyl turns you’ll discover a new revelation about the world or maybe even about yourself. This is what makes truly great music. It transports you inward and outward and unlocks the doors of perception. Many thanks to Brian Wilson and all the Beach Boys for this completely timeless work of art.
